"Old road user" could be MAIL (coach). But I can't see the rest of the clue. Anything to do with (chain) MAIL - armour?

Hi...It's my last answer too...same letters missing...all I can come up with is CARL...a Convertible being a Car...a Carl is an old churl, miser...maybe a tramp...an old road user, but not convinced & no explaining the L, Soz, Geordie Paul in Leeds

Another possibility is rail as in railroad?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/railroad

1. a permanent road laid with rails, commonly in one or more pairs of continuous lines forming a track or tracks, on which locomotives and cars are run for the transportation of passengers, freight, and mail.

i.e. converting an old road to rail?

Could the old road piece be the A1? AI..but that doesnt resolve the issue with the rest of the clue!

Could convertible refer to RL i.e. right or left? Using A1? It seems a very odd clue.

Hello Julie

I think the answer to 6 across is PAUL.
He was converted on the Road to Damascus, so he was an 'old road-user'!
