Brain-freeze here. Two words left: 32A Head of old imperial guard making a king look round with terrible shout _K_LUNHE_ and 18D Joke about Jewish 'doctor' I concealed in lucky dip? Sort of GR_BB__

OK. That changes two other words. I have FOULARD for 26A, and if that's right I have F_ITT for 26D, assuming that 33A is indeed LETTERCARD. I assume that 23D is AUTHOR, but I don't quite get why- One such (not English) alternating his pieces?

26d is FLITT. Foulard, Lettercard are correct, and I put Author, but can't see the wordplay, either.

Thanks again, SuzieM! I'll write you into the chorus of my next play. How's your Greek?

Non-existant! I'll just have to mime..

Good Luck with Azed (and your next play)

Here's a bit of fun from here in the US, one of the archived puzzles by the now-retired puzzlers at Atlantic Monthly: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2004/09/chain-links/3413/

re: 23 down - Thoreau (American author) - not English (e)- alternating his pieces. At least that is the sense I made of it.

That certainly is circuitous; you have to know the answer to know the clue. Rather good though- the double "not English." Makes perfect sense. Thanks!
