2d How no material was had by chance (9)
U?L?C?I?Y - Unluckily? but why

Could be noun, (material being a noun), less no (no)un + (by chance) - luckily, but it seems a bit of an obscure way to get an answer. Don't know if that's helped at all, but it's the best I can think of.
