For Xwordman:-In town = en ville. Sailor (AB0 replaces lieutenant (LT), but the t of Lt is one of the themed letters - so we have ENVI-AB-LE

If you can bear to take yourselves back... were the two words egocentric (I saw that that was given earlier) and self-satisfied?

If so, could someone please let me know the clue numbers from which these letters come, and the word-play for numbers 9, 11 and 18?

Hi Twm.

'egocentric' is right. 'self-satisfied' not right, but 'self-c??????' would be ('c' from 15d).

9 ... "Lie ?????" if you don't want to be seen (just like a man's best friend).
11 ... Just a reminder that 'N' represents a knight in chess; you can work back from there, I think.
18 ... Care of Daily Telegraph.

I had a look now, so may not be as bright as I might be.

I see the self-centred.

I sort of understand « doggo » but my spelling would need to lose both G and O, to make sense, wouldn't it? (I thought the answer was a word for the Almighty)

I now understand the very, very good (this comprehension is very recent!)

And I see the 18..thank you very much.

Twm - the lying quietly is "loveless" hence only the "g" is superfluous

Thank you, Ixion. I think that it is clear to me now.
As it was 'loveless', one O disappeared, leaving an O, a D and 2xG, one of which was the redundant letter - I reckon I'd've been looking for that for a month of Sundays and still not got it.

Renewed thanks for all the help.
