Hi AJT re the wordplay how does this grab you:

wares for goods but without the w = ares

the bit around it is then squail which I've never heard of but via google found the following:

The Oxford English dictionary has the following reference to "squail":

A table-game in which counters or disks are propelled towards some mark by snapping. App. introduced in 1857 by Mr. John Jaques, London.
