I would appreciate any help with the following:

One may have to pick one's way here (10)
???S???A?S

Scanning the books for money owing on the horses (8) ???????S

I'd be grateful if you could explain the answers too (so that theoretically I can learn from them). Thank you for your help.

Ixion and anniec,

Thank you both for your help and for your explanations. Crossroads seems obvious now, but I doubt I would have gotten studious.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck again (in a different corner this time).

Out to the opening ball from a spin bowler (3-5)
O?F?R???

One hundred in a cathedral city said to be poor (6) ??R??? The first letter may by 'Y'.

Sore times for ships (8)

I imagine these are fairly obvious, but I just can't see them. Thank you for any help.

JimC,

Thank you for your help, which was very prompt as always. I don't understand 'off-break', though.
