Thanks AJH - thats an intersting question Teenieleek - seem to remember from a previous post that the most recent edition removed some proper nouns - I wonder which edition of Chambers is superior for Xwords?

I had an old Chambers until some of the words in crosswords were not in it -I begrudgingly got the latest one-setters usually refer to the "newest" one If you have a few versions this will give you more options.

As a newcomer to advanced xwords it was good to get a relatively easy one - apart from 40a. Is it not a bit obscure to have a backward (probably quite modern really) suburb of Plymouth included?

To Ixion - Just caght up with this thread. Re Chambers and propert nouns - they've never had many - really only referring to them by way of explaining the origin of a word. Are you thinking of Collins? I've always kept a Collins because of proper nouns, but with the latest edition - and I haven't seen it - apparently they have cut them out.

You're probably correct AJT - (its a much battered Collins I use) - think I was thinking of that post by you.

Thank you both. Found a Gaelic dictionary:
beinn (ben) = mountain

And my captcha is, again, "banana". ;-)
