Plain = Steppe (geographical feature - russian steppes are plains)
way = St(reet)
to put records back to back - EP's were old vinyl records(maybe still on CD's)EP stood for Extended Play.
so, records back to back = eppe

Thank you all for your help. Don't know why I couldn't think of tear gas! Had got the word simple stuck in my head for 5 across which didn't help.

i thought of the word simle as well.

PLAIN BEING SIMPLE EP AND LP BOTH RECORDS BACK TO BACK AT THE END OF SIMPLE. HOPE THAT HELPS
