K thanks. I read your answer as A GUS is a dormouse and I thought I really had lost the plot.
Now why Italian?

Have same query re 'I'.
I reckon 'first' = Ist, then 'not second' = 'IT'
This leaves 'alian' which I thought might be an alternative spelling for 'alien' but it's not in my dictionary.
Maybe the definition here is just 'C' and the 'T' refers to saying 'alien' so 'alian' could be a homophone ~ bit far fetched perhaps but maybe not for this setter - I love his alphabetical puzzles.

How nice - thank you. I finished quite a while ago, and figured nobody would want answers as it is an alphabeticalIf I've read allproperly - explanation for Italian. I took the hostile group to be Taliban - then not the second - b.
Now I'll read the rest.
Beautiful puzzle by the way - I so enjoyed it.
