Two possible answers are 'Urey', a man's name, and 'grey' which is said to 'become a man'. But neither fully matches the whole clue. Help please (and explanation)

You were early with your query - I've only just finished Mephisto. Perhaps you've already got it by now,but in case you haven't, the answer is neither of your alternatives. The clue indicates a 7-letter man's name (as I make it, of course, no guarantee)
