I'm not sure that that explanation was the correct one, Breeze.

I think the French volume is Litre (as opposed to pint/gallon) Lit is short for literature (books) with the Latin abbbreviation "re" tagged onto it to give the French volume.
The result is the same...

On reflection (though I'm not altering the main thrust of what I said) 'RE' is a Latin term (meaning about/in the matter of).
It may not, however, be an abbreviation.
