Hi Jonno....I thought you might like to know (if you don`t already!) that this puzzle was set by The Grauniad`s Paul. As such, it was comparatively easy by his standards, but he is capable of quite diabolically Byzantine clues. Good Luck!!

Thank you - gave up! Sorry to be so defeatist, but it was strange could not get on his wave length at all! Now doing the Sunday prize crossword - with a good start boosting my confidence.
