Today's been my worst day with the crossword. I must have something else on my mind for I just can't get to grips with these:

"Horrible fear lead's casing cheap house" = 'prefab'. Where's the p and b coming from?
Engine in U-boat overhauled in old way" = 'outboard'. Where's the o, r and d coming from?
A principal nearly (very nearly) a successful person" = 'achiever'.
Uproar: husband cut unemployment benefit first" = 'hubbub'. I can easily place the Hub but not the Bub...
"Cross twice over about another one, neighbouring" = 'next door'.
"Brownish-grey shark picked up" = 'taupe'. I've scanned a huge list of sharks (who knew there were so many of the buggers?) but can't find one that sounds like taupe...

Many thanks.

NEXT DOOR is made up of 3 of the meanings of cross (there seem to be lots more just like your sharks!)

(1)ROOD = representing the cross on which Christ died
(2)TEN = Roman Numeral X

(3) X = symbol for wrong/error

1. Husband cut short is hubb(y) + ub (unemployment benefit)= hubbub.

2. Taupe is a brown-grey colour. it can be pronounced (picked up) "tope". Tope is the name for a species of small shark. So a colour that sounds like a shark is perfectly logically Taupe.
