I am struggling to parse 55 a)

Provided by good man, stir stew (7)
I have S?I?A?O . I can see STIFADO as a stew fits but can't see any cryptic parsing in the rest of the clue. I'd be grateful of any light shed on this "stew"

ST - good man
IF - provided (I don't like this much, but it is commonly used in crosswords)
ADO - stir, as in "trouble"

ChrisE, I agree with you re 'If'. It would be better (ie correct) if clues used 'provided that' - but they seldom do!

Thanks to all who replied so promptly. If I realised" good man " gave ST. the other 2 parts would have fallen into place.

You will find "if " given as an alternative to "provided" in most Thesauruses....it also in Anne Bradford's dictionary.
