25 across i7 letters 3 1 3 clue purchase a newly born dog and discover it's not a pedigree. I have buy a p?p if that's pup I don't get the logic of it.

Hi Babs, you're right, it is 'Buy a pup' - it's slang and means pretty much the same as 'To buy a lemon' etc.

It's a similar phrase as 'Pig in a poke' - you either pay over the odds or don't get what you wanted.
