Thanks, Wintonian, that sounds much better! I didn't parse it for myself when I did the puzzle earlier - I simply checked that 'mong/mongrel' existed. I should keep myself away from parsing.

The wordplay indicates that N ("one's content", ie the letter 'inside' ONE) is to 'share' ('cut, cleave') MOG ('cat'), and the definition is 'dog'.
