I don’t have my copy of the puzzle with me, but from memory the answer was SWINESTY ( wines in sty). Chambers gives a secondary definition of frank as a Shakespearean word for pigsty.

The clue about coloured glass is the Italian form of the plural, ending in I, not S.

Thanks very much Wintonian and Mamya. You are right - it works if you substitute an I for the second S. This would have SMALTS as SMALTI which works in the Italian sense though I still can't quite see how the whisky bit works. (FYI Wintonian, this clue was 'Southern Whisky in coloured glasses (6)')
Thanks again, I'm going to fill it in and send it off!

The parsing is S (southern) + MALT (whisky) + I(n). I’d also originally put the answer in as SMALTS, but then it didn’t fit with SWINESTY. The word SMALTI is given in Chambers as one of the plural forms of smalto, meaning a piece of coloured glass used in a mosaic.
