I can't decide if 9d is IMPROVER or IMPROVES
The clue is: Extemporising ruler who gets better (8)

I/m not sure either. What's the clue for the word that the S or the R would affect?

my money is on improver.

improv (dim of improvisation) + ER (the queen).

terry's looks to be right if improv. is a recognised abbreviation for improvise.
