Yidreg, I have been hunting!
"Pace" as a preposition (I am not sure what that is!) means "with all due respect to".
So it looks OK.

Rusty, well done - that was quite a tricky one. We had 'pace = with respect' in another crossword, not so long ago (and I enjoyed learning that it is not pronounced the same as pace, step.)

Yes, it is from the Latin and it is from pax, it's the ablative form (not something we need to think about in any great detail!).
