I have managed to complete the grid, other than 4ac and 5 down- which are both thematic. I have been staring at these for an hour now, and still no closer - hopefully the game today will inspire me later on!

I think 4ac is abbreviation for Bishop, in the middle of a word for assistants. One word in the clue has to be extended.

I'm still struggling with the SE corner eg 24d. I have a rough idea of the theme, and I've guessed the top unclued entry, but can't find it in ODQ- is it there?

24d is to do with a body of troops, it is in Bradfords for Company. I got the quotation from google as it isn't in my ODQ, it is by A.L.T.

Finally parsed 5d, as only one word fits my grid. Like some of the other clues, I think the wordplay is tenuous to say the least - but not unfair.

The quote is in the ODQ 7th edition.
I think the hint already given for 4ac is good (adjust the last word in the clue).
5dn - add to the word after Fulham to give a (4 letter) shortened word for some underwear - you need the (6 letter) longer word for this, then omit the 'nasty smell' and add R.

Sorry about my unnecessary 'help' with the clues - I was reading the queries in the wrong order!

I know which letter is to be treated by lips graph you but still finding this a slog. Or is it the weather? Please help me get going.
