Can I pick your brain? I have noticed once or twice you have referred to "down" clues being different to "across" clues.
As a novice, I would love an explanation

I hope Trevor won't mind me answering.

Certain constructs should only be used with across clues, like "to the west" which means to reverse. The equivalent down construct would be "to the north".

The one that Trevor mentioned was "look up", which would be silly for an across clue, for which the equivalent might be "look back".

The number of these constructs is limited only by the imagination of the setter, so it would not be possible to list all of them.

I try on my blog to point out, whenever I can, that the construct only applies to the appropriate clue.

I just checked back, but was only able to find a few down-clue only examples - all from recent Telegraph crosswords.

Indicating the sequence of the wordplay
inferior (before); on (before); under (after).

Reverse all or part of the wordplay:
Heading north; promoted; gets up; upset.

The last one is particularly tricking as it can also signal an anagram!!

Quite often you can solve the clue without appreciating that the construct only applies to down (or across) clues, but after a while you will find yourself looking out for such niceties.
