Ancient idol's front and back (4)

I have it, three letters are provided by other answers, and it parses.

But I'm struggling to match the definition to the answer - which is not in Chambers.

The Chambers definition of 'Ancient' does not fit well [timeously] with the answer.

Or am I missing something?

Thank you Elle - I think my query is that the definition of ancient as given in Chambers is of a much earlier era than the 16th Century Iago...

But otherwise an elegant puzzle given the grid position of the 17 27!

An "ancient" can be defined as a standard bearer.
Iago was standard bearer to Othello.
I don't think the time element is relevant to the clue.

I have just checked in Bradford's Dictionary.....
She too gives "ancient " = "Iago".
