27A - Pit donkey around close (5) A?T?S

The only answer that fits is ASTOS, but is it a real word and does it mean a pit?

John, I think the answer may be ABYSS.

John,

The answer is ABYSS. It looks like you have an error or two in your answers.

Thanks guys. The T came from APOSTLE which I had tentatively entered as the answer to:

Faithful follower of a bridge system (7)

ACOLYTE now fits.

I have just been reminded in another place, that Acol is of course a bidding system in Bridge. Being a player of Cribbage rather than bridge, this had passed me by until now. So much to learn and so little time to do it.
