I’m quite new to cryptic crosswords so I’m trying to figure out how the clues work. Can anyone tell me why “With a gun, covering the access route” would be “road”. I can see the access route part but don’t understand the “with a gun” part. Thanks.

The gun is Rod, 'with a' means you add an 'a' - so Road, access route.
