Hi, We had this crossword clue in a recent puzzle:

Kind-quiet and calm, too (5)
Our known letters are: _R_E_

Some of us think the answer is ORDER, but some of us think it's BREED.

Personally I can understand ORDER - i.e. 'kind' (i.e. type, order, as used in animal classification. also 'quiet and calm' means 'order'), but I can't understand how BREED can be the answer. This website also suggests BREED is the answer.

Can anyone offer an explanation for BREED being the answer?
Thanks!

I would go for
ORDER which also means kind, quiet, and calm
Which site gives breed ?

Hi, I'm not able to post a link , as my post count is too low, but the website is called wordplays(dot)com.
Also if you google the entire clue, you will see a link to it. Thanks

Ah. wordplays website cannot be trusted. They often give wrong answers. They copy answers from other sites, even if the answer is wrong !

This is from last Saturdays 'Mail Giant Crossword' jazzy.

Cryptic clue:
32A Kind - quiet and calm, too (5)

Quick clue:
32A Class or variety (5)

I believe that 'Breed' works better with the quick clue.

I wonder if it is a double definition ???

Order and class are different levels of classification. Close enough for the Mail, though!

This is the full classification for a lion:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Suborder: Feliformia
Family: Felidae
Genus: Panthera
Species: P. leo
