I've got 'ITS' from the crossing letters, but can't parse the clue.

Hi both, it's stat (Latin) reversed giving tats, a shortened form of tattoo³.

Rossim, it's a thematic puzzle with some cells occupied by more than 1 letter as a consequence of clashes and/or the answer being longer than the available cells.

Thanks, ginge. I'll have to have another look at that clue in the morning.

Thanks ginge ... didn't realise there was "the" in front of that thematic one!

Like cloverjo I have 'I' as the last letter of 20d. If 36a is TATS then the crossing cell must contain both the 'I' and the 'T'. Therefore one of the other two cells must contain two letters but both 5d and 26d are clues to entries that do not contribute to any coloured cells (I.e. cells containing two letters) as both 5d and 26d contain items to be removed before solving.
Have I misunderstood the instructions? (more than likely!)
Any help gratefully received!

I is the last letter of 20d
TA goes in the same cell ....making for the themed cell T A I .....

Ask again if you don't follow ... have you got the theme?
