I found this week's a real problem with several difficult clues.
My main problem is with 21dn "Sport needing bags, no joke (4)". I have an answer but can see no valid connection with bags or jokes.

If you take "gag" (joke) away from a 7 letter word for suitcases, you end up with a sport (4letters) ?

If the answer is what I think it is - I don't have a copy, so have no idea of crossing letters, there's a three-letter word for 'joke' which would go inside your answer to provide 'bags'.

I am puzzled by 21D too. But am more stuck in top right corner where I have no answers. Help please for 8A Girl putting Spaniard in pot. (9) Any help given might get me started with the others in this area.

Thanks jazzgirl for explanation for w1D and Malone for hint about 8A. I would never have got the latter!

Thanks Jazzgirl. I tried putting letters in front, and after but it didn't occur to me to try something in the middle.

Happy to help, but Malone and I submitted at the same time, so thanks to Malone also :)

I've finished but it took a while to fathom how some of the answers fitted with the clues, Thanks for the help on 21d but I've still no idea for 5D! I've another word for teacher which I'm fairly sure is right *u*u -but don't see it from "regularly glum sport teacher." I hope it's not too obvious?
