12 across - French for bucket (4) ---r. 6 down - Bone cavity encloses your heart like a snake (7) s-n---s. I thought sinuses but what has that got to do with snake? Also, that would make 12 acrosses answer -s-r. Hmmmm!

As far as I remember, the french word for bucket is seau - are you sure of the r?

Pour is French for "for". Pour (in English) means in this this case "to bucket down", as in rain.
