51 Maxi, long dress. Maxim was the saw/saying, take off the second 'm' (second maiden cast off).

Thanks Malone.

I was thinking that the second maiden being cast off meant an 'a' was to be discarded. Wrong end of the stick.

I got the ET and A parses, but struggled with the Z. But thought BETA the Greek letter was apt. But I'm now thinking better of beta :-)

I was delighted to see Eric's post & the various responses as this area was, & to a large extent still is, a complete vacuum for me this week.

However I'm still stuck on several including :
29D - Finally free in afternoon, what gamblers go for in a Welsh town (8)
P???????
46A - Remain alive - conduct tidy performance of 30's song? (4, 4, 3, 4 8)
???? ??D? ??D ?O?L ?O?E?H?R (TOGETHER?)
& lastly 12D - Area in E London to search for relative (S?N?)
