Some of the clues here look possible but I can't solve the instructions! They begin "A message relating to I II directs solvers towards..." Is the "I II" correct or is it a placeholder that has not been filled in?

I and II are the 2 unclued in rows 4 and 5 (5,7)

As you fill the grid there aren't many possibles for those when you have the crossers.

Things should be clearer then

The I II are just two unclued answers that become obvious when you start to fill the grid

44a. Oriental dish produced by recycled Indian equipment (8).
I have ?A?I??RI
I have ideas but can’t parse...

44 The Oriental dish, quite a well-known one, .
has a three-letter word for equipment inside, am not sure how the rest works!

39 Hearts = the football team. The defence might have avoid a ????, change the letters very slightly.

39d ...What effective defence might have avoided... is goal ...now move the Oand A

44a equipment = KIT

you should be able to get the answer now from Chambers word wizard inserting the letters you have already

I like Chalicea’s puzzles not the toughest but always interesting themes.
