11 down - Awfully sick after consuming red-hot brandy (6)

The answer must be KIRSCH. I am OK with the anagram of 'sick' and the 'h' for hot but nowhere can I find any justification for 'r' being 'red'.

Any thoughts anyone?

Maybe the word initially should have been included.

The Free Dictionary on-line, gives "R" as an abbreviation for "red".
I am not convinced, though!

Does that mean other basic colours like blue, yellow and green can be initialled then?
