I have finished it but cant parse the answers FAYRE and EYRAS.

Clearly they include thematic anagrams, but what is the reference to "old" for, and what does seven spitting creatures mean?

I thought FAYRE was an old word for show. Haven't a clue about the other one.

Hi jigjag. S = 7 and I assume these south American wildcats spit.

Thanks cleverjo and orson. I only think of camels and cobras as spitting creatures but these cats might well do so

I've finished but am not completely happy with the parsing of SCOG - since when is a cog a gear? (come to think if it, I guess it doesn't really matter...!)

Cog is given under "gear" in Chambers Crossword Dictionary.
