Something that's bugging me long after the solve is the extra component to 26d (the answer I'm fairly sure is AGORA):
Market forming circle in Indian city - see a white man there?

I guess the second part is a bonus pointer to the solution, because the first part O in AGRA is okay on its own. Can anyone enlighten me please?

I really don't know why Azed bothered with the last bit - 'Market forming circle in Indian city' is a perfectly good clue for AGORA. The idea behind the 'bonus element' is (I believe) that in the (Greek or Indian) marketplace you might see a 'white man', or 'someone assumed to deal fairly with others' [Chambers], but it fell rather flat for me.

Thanks, JackNatter. That's probably right, if a little odd. Azed's occasional 2-for-1s are usually a lot cleverer, which was why it was nagging me that I couldn't see it.

Hi Des

I originally thought that the second wordplay must refer to A GORA, but when I looked 'gora' up I found nothing. However, I was using an old version of Chambers on my PC - checked again today in the printed 2014 edition and there it is - GORA 'a white male' (Hindi). We can now both rest easy!

My excuse - it's the first crossword I've done in six months or so...
