I've had a look at the link provided by Cerasus, and done the crossing clues... this gives
W?A?H?? / ?O?E?A?T
so "weather forecast" would fit?

It 's not very satisfactory, but then nor were some of the other clues!
Not an "Everyman" as we know it these days!

Thanks for that input , elle - I must confess that I couldn't be bothered to work out the crossers.

All done - just one or two to parse......
No sign of Sunny 5661 coming back to see what we've made of his /her clue?

The link I posted had a completed grid, as I had pressed the "reveal all" button. I now see that it was only revealed on my PC ! The answer is, of course, weather forecast.

I can see that Weather Forecast fits and that it "follows the news" but where does "I may be sent out" part of the clue fit with the answer?

Possibly, there was a printing error

"It" was printed as "I" ?

Interesting to hear that. Whenever I post a link to a crossword I'm recommending, I always clear the grid first. It seems that this isn't necessary!
