Many thanks, Jazzgirl ! There isn't a single week that goes
by without one or two baffling clues in this puzzle where
I NEVER work out the clue! ENTER is certainly the best bet
by far and, knowing some of the wiles of this compiler, when they say things like "Earl left", this usually implies that
there's an "E" to the extreme left of the solution, i.e. the first letter. but then, like you, I wouldn't be able to account for the "R" of "ENTER". Still, there we go - I won't lose any sleep over it! Thanks again.

Chambers shows r as "reading" so I think the clue passes as OK (just )
