A fun idea, one unknown to me but readily googleable. However I can't complete 5D which reads (with the extra word not shown):

With marks covering artist's right hand, you get cloth.

Crossing letters mean it's either WADMAL or WADMOL (the 5th letter being unchercked), but I'm blowed (polite euphemism) if I know which.

If you take the RH (right hand) out of an artist and replace it with an old abbreviation for 'marks', you'll get it.

Thanks, malone. Obvious when you see it, but utterly dense until then. I was convinced that the W came from "with", although I had sussed out the DM bit.

Some questions:

is 11d an anagram? I am not finding any word that gives me the bird.

does 7a start with K and end in G?

11 Definitely an anagram.
7 Yes.
21. Hair is the definition. 'Ready' doesn't mean 'prepared', but another usage that appears in crossword, the 'only just' is straightforward.

You've got the right anagram! I can't remember if I confirmed it on google or in Chambers, but it fits the clue.

Anagram solver does give me a few anagrams.
Nothing shows I as the second letter.
But I have ?I??ET????.
Nothing fits there. That is why I was hoping to get the first letter.

your letters are fine....the anagram solver works better without the S in .....you'll get a hummingbird ....then put the s back in
