It's not a homophone ( sounds like).
How about?

Played by dull fowl? (9)

Yes, serious plot! (grave) is an example of a dd.

Isn't BORED and BOARD a homophone?

What does "Played by" indicate?

I really do want a "board games" clue, but in the course of this, a pretty great double definition clue is "Fowl Play", both forms of GAME.

So I started tackling "BOARD" as a separate clue, and since I have DD on the mind, I came up with:

Beam aboard (5) - BOARD
or
Enter lodge (5) - BOARD

I also tried a container clue:

Enter by paddle, inside big drain (5) - BOARD
Find "board" (a synonym for Enter) by placing OAR into big drain "B" & "D", getting B OAR D
To make this one, I worked off this example from the wikipedia page: Apostle's friend outside of university (4)
gives PAUL ("apostle"), by placing "pal" ("friend") outside of "U" ("university").

I thought played by completed the definition.

Yes, you're right about bored/board. Sorry to confuse you.

NB fowl is game not games.

Wow, I'm genuinely impressed with how you've worked on these, crypticnoobie! Sorry I couldn't help much earlier - needed to sleep!

A point on using single letters - u for university and b for big are standard, but I've not seen d for drain. Dictionaries will confirm such things.

Ah, yeah, that does complete the definition, I like it.

Thanks SteveA6000. Is there a standard D word I could use instead?

I'm slowly spelling out "One Foot In The Grave", as single words, instead of a phrase, and came up with one for foot:
O oft spoilt tread (4) - FOOT

I've been working on one about how my friend is a standup comedian in his spare time, but it hasn't clicked yet?

Copse, ascendant, stands erect (7) - STANDUP
So this one started as "Copse ascendant, stands erect", as a charade type clue. Another word for copse is STAND, another word for ascendant is UP, Stands erect is the definition.

Reversed blue spruce copse, ascendant, stands erect (7) - STANDUP
Then I added "reversed blue spruce", because I was playing with how blue is also a word for down, and Spruce could suggest SPRUCE UP.

Ingrown blue spruce copse, ascendant, stands erect (7) - STANDUP
And I tried using a more applicable word instead of reversed?

But I think the first version is still the most correct. I just don't love the surface read of it.

Crypto, another 'rule' is not to have something obvious within the clue that is in the answer - I'm referring to the use of 'stand(s)' in several of your trial clues for standup.

As for d, look in a paper dictionary at the very beginning of D.
