17 For 'turnover', think pastry!

24 and 40 are quite unusual words, I'll try to come up with hints.

Thanks for the pastry tip. I was obsessed with 'turning over' the word, didn't think of simple double-meaning.

24 Has a three letter word for (a) commune, inside a four-letter word for profound/secret. The definition is 'one of doubtful respectability'. I think it's a French word, which has passed into usage.
