I have completed the above but got 5d only because I had the 2 letters from other answers and with that there could only be one answer that fitted. I have since seen the explanation provided in Crossword Solutions but I always thought that the last 4 letters for the clue given minus one of them which is obvious is only a verb and not a noun.

If I am wrong about the sequence of the last 4 letters minus one letter being a verb only and it is a noun then no problem but other views will be appreciated

Thanks

mop

Hi mop
As jazzy says, best to give the clue.

You've tried fitting an F (loud) into your answer, I expect. I've heard it used as a noun as well as a verb.

"The **** of the hammer...."

OK someone on another forum has shown the parsing as w (with) + a 4-letter word for "weight" minus f (loud) the whole answer being "to sharpen"

Hi jazzy
I think mop was doubting the 4-letter word as a noun, but I think it's OK.

Yes, the 4 letter for "weight" can be a noun. I am off out to drive family to the park

Please Jazzgirl what other forum have you found? I do appreciate the posts even though I don't look until after I have finished.

Hi kitkat
jazzy is out deer-watching at the moment. I don't know, but the "other site" might have been AnswerBank
