I reckon the answer to 20 across is FLORID but not sure why ("Red-faced, filling female top with gold").
'female top' is presumably the leading 'f' , gold could be 'or'

Any thoughts?

F(emale) + OR (Gold) inside LID (Top)

F - female, top - lid. gold - or - florid?

F = female, Lid = top and this is 'filled' with gold/Or - so F l or id.

D'oh .. thanks all - I get it now - 'f' 'lid' is filled with 'or' :-)
