Clue:

Plant shot up, with so-called writer's support (7)

Answer:
Lobelia

Lobelia is a kind of plant, but other than that I can't see how the clue fits. Maybe "shot" could refer to "lob"?

Yes, LOB reversed + ELIA

Elia was a pseudonym (so-called) for Charles Lamb, and often used in crosswords for a writer

Sorry, LOB isn't reversed, perhaps 'up' just means a high shot.

Thank you, mattrom. I had no idea about Elia and Charles Lamb. The clue was inscrutable to me, but now I get it.
