Something like SCANDALS. Does that work around the clue, with SANDALS as shoes?

Yes Sammy - it reads as if it would be sandals if the C - for cent - - were gone.

about = circa = c. with shoes (sandels)outside.

Thanks AJT, I couldn't see how it worked, even though it looked right! Shouldn't they have put "cent out" rather than "sent out"?
