re 20d I know the clue shows "lift" which we are expected to use as "L" but no mention of this use appears in Chambers nor in any list of abbreviations I have accessed. Is Dac just showing off (again) with his knowledge of some obscure fact ?

Hello, Jazzgirl!
I have not seen the clue, but could it be an error, and "lift" should read "left" for "L" ?

hi rusty
I have just found this on wikipedia

L/D ratio, is the amount of lift generated by a wing or vehicle, divided by the aerodynamic drag it creates by moving through the air. ... The term is calculated for any particular airspeed by measuring the lift generated, then dividing by the drag at that speed.

Well I thought everyone knew that !!! Grrr
L/D is not in Chambers either, and should L have been used on its own without the D. ?
End of rant.....
