Thank you Rusty.
It certainly fits and I know you'd get milk from dairy cattle but am obviously being a bit thick .... I don't understand the clue!

Hello, Knockdrin!
"Lowers these for milk"
Cattle are "lowers".
The "mooing" sound they make is called "lowing".
So "these lowers" are cattle.
Dairy cattle are kept for making milk.
Hope this helps!

Hello Rusty!
Well! That's a lot of stuff I never knew!!
I've only just started doing this crossword, my cousin is the farmer and reads the paper and I just picked up the supplement.
Am getting an agricultural education!
Thx again.

Glad to help, Knockdrin!
Do you know the Christmas song, "Away in a Manger"?
In that there are a couple of lines that go,
"the cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes".
It was the cattle lowing/mooing that woke the wee Baby.
Enjoy your crossword!
