34a I have straw pole but feel it should be straw poll?

I'd love to help, but you haven't given the clue! We don't all have a copy of the paper.

I have the Jumbo Cryptic 1283 puzzle......although I haven't done any of it.....
but 34 a says:
Way of signalling greater numbers of fish around south and east (5,4)
The answer would appear to be "mor s e cod e" = way of signalling(def)
more- greater numbers
cod =fish
s- south
e-east

This is no way resembles your suggestion of "straw pole/ poll"?
Are you sure you quoted the correct number for the clue?
