I'm having trouble parsing 1d , would appreciate any help in understanding how my answer fits the clue ! ( answer could be wrong of course! )

1d Savour putting down socialist leader , say (5)

I have T _ S _ E ,
so looks like answer is TASTE ,
which matches 'savour' ,
and S is the leader ( first letter) of word 'socialist' ,
which leaves TATE.......?

Say would be State. If you put down the S, Socialist leader, you get Taste, savour.

I thought it was a rather clunky clue, not very good.
