1a Call for dismissal (5) CH??? ... think the 4th letter is "C"

yes check looks okay - as in check mate (dismissal)?

I went for Chuck - defined in Chambers as a 'call' and it's also a dismissal?

35A is causing me problems. I know the theme and the this is the only unclued light remaining. I have s-ou- and I cannot find the answer where I found all the rest. Are my letters correct please?

Your letters are fine. The answer to 35 A is a word meaning dust in Scotland, but Chambers says it also means 'battle, tumult, assault'. The thematic answer is more widely-known than some of the other examples we got!
