5D School swaps end of corridor for quiet room in cathedral (12)
It's either CHAPTERHOUSE OR CHARTERHOUSE.

No matter how many times I read this clue I can not see any convincing argument for either word.
Any elucidation please?
I think this is an unfair clue when the offending letter is unchecked.

5D chapterhouse = room in cathedral (def)
Charterhouse - school
Swap r (end of corridor) for p (quiet)

Chapterhouse - room in cathedral
Charterhouse (school) with the R (end of corridor) replaced with P (quiet)

I think the clue implies CHAPTERHOUSE, but I agree that it's unfair.

One word for chapterhouse seems OK, but it could also be two, of course.

Thank you Chrise.
Wickepedia shows it firstly as two words and one word as an alternative.
Chambers (The Times Bible!) shows it as one word.
So no help there!

Chapterhouse is the correct answer.
I thought that Chrisg and I had both explained the reasoning for that in our posts!

I think "school swaps" means start with the school word and alter it to get the answer, hence chapterhouse
