finished the crossword i think. quite a few i didnt understand .if someone could please explain. clue, judge and old magistrate improve and the answer is reform and next clue, contest jerks fought,hard going,flipping sore! = tug of war thanks

Ref (judge) o(old) rm (resident magistrate)

Anagram (jerks) fought less h (hard)

War is raw (sore) in reverse

contest jerks fought,hard going,flipping sore! = tug of war

anagram of foug(h)t with the H removed

raw = sore (reversed)

I'd recommend "Some adventures of an Irish RM" - the book, not the disappointing TV adaptation - by Somerville and Ross. Hilarious!

You will have to pan down some but you should find the accepted abbreviation here.
