finished the crossword i think. quite a few i didnt understand .if someone could please explain. clue, judge and old magistrate improve and the answer is reform and next clue, contest jerks fought,hard going,flipping sore! = tug of war thanks

Anagram (jerks) fought less h (hard)

War is raw (sore) in reverse

I'd recommend "Some adventures of an Irish RM" - the book, not the disappointing TV adaptation - by Somerville and Ross. Hilarious!
