Hi Hope everyone is well!1

Idn "Hindu widow has material in short supply"
All agree SATI
But Sati is the practice of widow BURNING not the widow!!!
So I think that this clue gets a low mark for inaccuracy.

Should be interested to hear other views

Kind Regards THEA(o)

Chambers defines Sati/Suttee as 'noun, an Indian woman who burned herself on her husband's funeral pyre; the Hindu custom of so doing.' That seems fine?

Anne Bradford's Dictionary has "sati" under "widow".
Look good to me.

Hi Malone Thanks for that. The "widow" definition is apparently an obscure usage as opposed to the "burning" definition. However technically both are valid. So I will allow the accuracy but only half a mark for obscurity. Incidently the OED has the burning def as the main one.
What a life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare ( at the small print in the dictionary!!!

Hope that you've had a good day

Thanks again Thea(o)

Thanks rusty Anne Bradford is a godsend (usually) . I find some of her associations rather kleptomatic.

But thanks for the note and good wishes.

Thea(o), I welcome any opportunity to look through my dictionary. In crosswordland, 'technically valid' means 'valid, like it or lump it' - sorry!

In Sanskrit, the meaning of "sati" is "true wife."
